Introducing an Industry First – Vertica in Eon Mode for Pure Storage

Posted September 17, 2019 by Jeremiah Morrow, Senior Industry Product Marketing Manager

This week at the Pure Accelerate conference, Vertica and Pure Storage announced the availability of Vertica in Eon Mode for Pure Storage, the industry’s first and only analytical database solution with a separation of compute and storage architecture for on-premises analytic workloads.

Why is this important to you?

The rush to migrate analytic workloads to the cloud was, in large part, driven by the desire to separate compute and storage. This gave organizations much greater control and flexibility with their analytics projects. They could scale infrastructure resources dynamically, isolate workloads for individual teams and projects, and take advantage of cost-effective distributed file and object storage to manage large data volumes.

Yet some organizations were not prepared for the challenges of migrating to the cloud – the level of effort, expertise, and cost were often understated, and many of the benefits of cloud computing were never realized. Lingering concerns over the potential risks of multi-tenancy (security, privacy, performance of shared resources) continue to delay or dismantle attempts to move to the cloud before they even get started.

Vertica in Eon Mode for Pure Storage – The benefits of a cloud-optimized architecture, now delivered on-premises

Vertica has partnered with Pure Storage to bring Vertica in Eon Mode – our analytical database with an architecture that separates compute from storage, leveraging S3 Object Storage – to Pure Storage FlashBlade™, an on-premises distributed file and object storage solution. It gives customers a powerful data processing and storage unit that is built to scale for modern data volumes.

Vertica in Eon Mode separates compute and storage to give organizations greater flexibility and operational efficiency and:

  • Brings varying levels of compute to the database by scaling the cluster as needed.
  • Scales compute to the active data set (“hot data”) without archiving inactive data.
  • Isolates workloads by business unit or by type of workload using subclusters.

The result is an on-premises solution that is as flexible and adaptable as a public cloud solution without the myriad challenges and pitfalls of migrating legacy analytic workloads and databases to the cloud.

Embrace innovation with data wherever it lives

Organizations have generally accepted that not every workload belongs in a public cloud, and certainly not with a single cloud provider. Because the future is multi-cloud and hybrid, a mixture of cloud and on-premises environments, Big Data innovations need to be available to those organizations beyond the cloud. Vertica can help companies leverage data to make better decisions and better serve their customers, whether their data is in the cloud or on-premises.
