About the Event
Tracking commercial aircraft in real-time using a Raspberry Pi, Kafka and Vertica
Through 2017, the Big Data & Machine Learning (London) Meetup group held a series of presentations on how, using relatively simple to acquire hardware and software, it is possible to track the flights of commercial aircraft in near real-time.
Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) data from aircraft transponders is captured and decoded using a Raspberry Pi, passed through a series of Apache Kafka Topics before being loaded into a Vertica database. Subsequent presentations went on to show how this streaming real-time, combined with historic data could be manipulated and used with relative ease using the in-built analytics capabilities of Vertica for data capture, enrichment, measuring and preparing.
Demonstrating simple SQL functions for handling time series data, gap filling and interpolation, sessionization, outlier detection etc.
