What’s New in Vertica 8.1: Supported Platforms

Posted April 18, 2017 by nunziato

With Vertica Release 8.1, we continue to enhance and broaden our platform support.

New Operating Systems for Vertica Server

Vertica continues to perform extensive testing as we qualify major Linux distributions for use with the Vertica Analytic Database. Our testing ensures both stability and performance when you use Vertica with a supported operating system.

For release 8.1, Vertica has added support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.3, CentOS 7.3, and Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) 7.3.

As of release 8.1, Vertica supports five major versions of RHEL and CentOS, and two versions of OEL. Of course, we also support other operating systems (SUSE, Debian, and Ubuntu). For details on all the operating systems we support, see Vertica Server and Vertica Management Console.

Tip: Always run Vertica on the latest minor version of a supported operating system. For example, if you currently run Vertica on RHEL 7.0, Vertica recommends that you upgrade to the latest release supported by Vertica, which, at the time of this writing, is RHEL 7.3.

New Operating Systems for Vertica Clients

Vertica now supports Windows Server 2016 for the ADO.NET, OLE DB, and ODBC clients. For the ODBC and vsql clients, Vertica now supports AIX 7.1 and Mac OS X 10.12. For a list of all client drivers, see Vertica 8.1.x Client Drivers.

ODBC Client Driver Backwards Compatibility

Our ODBC driver is now backwards compatible, meaning that the ODBC driver is compatible with previous versions of the Vertica server. The 8.1.x ODBC client driver is backwards compatible to Vertica server version 7.1. For information on driver-server compatibility, see Vertica 8.1.x Client Drivers. For full compatibility with a previous server version, you may have to specify a special Protocol property in your connection string. For information, see Data Source Name (DSN) Connection Properties.

New Hadoop and Kafka Support

Vertica has added support for Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) 2.5 and MapR 5.2. We’ve tested Vertica 8.1 with these distributions. While these are the versions we have specifically tested, we expect Vertica to work with subsequent Hadoop distributions. We test subsequent versions as soon as it’s practical for us to do so. Find a list of all currently supported versions, see Vertica Integrations for Hadoop.

Vertica has added support for Apache Kafka 0.10. For a list of currently supported versions of Apache Kafka, see Vertica Integration for Apache Kafka.

New FIPS-Compatible Client Driver

Vertica has added a FIPS-compliant (FIPS 140-2) JDBC driver, which requires RHEL 6.6. For information on FIPS support, see FIPS 140-2 Supported Platforms. For a list of all client drivers, see Vertica 8.1.x Client Drivers.

Support for Linux Volume Manager

Vertica now supports Linux Volume Manager (LVM) on RHEL 6.8. Check out Vertica Support for LVM for information and restrictions.
