| WHAT: | Database systems are at the core of enterprise applications yet they are the last bastion of the old big iron infrastructure. With most database systems originally designed over thirty years ago, it is no surprise that they remain tied to proprietary I/O subsystems and require dedicated resources. These technologies are burdened by the infrastructure for which they were designed and unable to take advantage of the new innovations in industry standard hardware such as virtualization.
The use cases and best practices being presented are based on a range of tests conducted in conjunction with VMware. The impact of mission critical technologies such as VMotion and DRS was also measured against a representative workload. Measuring and monitoring these tests provided a baseline for running mission critical BI workloads on a virtualized Vertica platform. |
