Sigma Systems and Vertica Team Up to Give Operators Mediation with Real-time Analytics

MANAGEMENT WORLD 2009, NICE, FRANCE, May 6, 2009 - Sigma Systems, an industry leader in Advanced IP Service Fulfillment solutions, and Vertica Systems, Inc., maker of high-performance analytic database management software, announced today that the companies are partnering to deliver a robust mediation solution for telecom and cable service providers.

The partnership gives communications service providers access to the Sigma Active Mediation Platform (AMP) with the Vertica® Analytic Database. The joint solution gives service providers the break-through ability to analyze larger volumes of usage and subscriber data at any level of detail and in real time in order to identify service upgrade opportunities, reduce leakage, create advanced advertising programs and improve customer retention.

Sigma's AMP allows service providers to collect and process terabytes of usage data and associated subscriber profile and order information from a diverse and complex network of voice, data and multi-media communications environments and feed it into Vertica-based analytic hubs for fast, ad-hoc reporting on real-time CDR, IPDR, VOD, SNMP and other telecom data. The solution gives service providers new and better insight into service fulfillment, rating, charging, billing and profitability that result in competitive advantage, tight regulatory compliance and a better customer experience.

"Mediation is becoming more crucial as the industry moves from all-you-can-eat to you-get-what-you-pay-for service models," said Rick Mallon, vice president of Product Management for Sigma Systems. "By partnering with Vertica, we are enabling Sigma service provider customers to analyze in real time the massive amounts of data collected on service usage across the network to maintain efficiencies, improve customer satisfaction and identify new revenue opportunities."

AMP gives service providers the ability to monitor usage for:

  • VoIP & Wireless services
    • By enabling providers to collect and process call detail records (CDRs) in real time or batch and make that information available to the billing system, engineering, etc.
  • High-speed internet services
    • By providing IPDR collection from network elements to monitor service flow usage
    • By allowing providers to implement Fair Bandwidth solutions as well as identify upgrade sales opportunities
  • Cable TV/Video On Demand
    • By providing usage records for reconciliation processes for content providers

The Vertica Analytic Database is specifically built to handle large-scale, fast-growing analytic data management workloads in telecom. It features a unique columnar, MPP architecture to speed up query processing by orders of magnitude and aggressive data compression that reduces storage requirements by as much as 90 percent, dramatically cutting hardware overhead and energy consumption so customers can analyze larger amounts of data at a fraction of the cost. In customer benchmarks (www.vertica.com/benchmarks), Vertica has answered queries against terabytes of data 50 to 200 times faster than competing databases and specialized analytic hardware. Combining the Vertica Analytic Database with Sigma's AMP gives more people within service providers the freedom to analyze more data in more ways, faster, so they can:

  • Examine network and call data in real-time to improve quality of service
  • Query years of data at any detail level
  • Make more profitable call routing and infrastructure build-out decisions
  • Eliminate revenue leakage
  • Reduce customer churn
  • Identify fraud

"Because Sigma often manages every service in the provider's network - from broadband to VoIP and wireless to TV - it makes sense to combine our best-of-breed products," said Derek Schoettle, Managing Director Telecommunications, Vertica. "Storing the wide variety of Sigma-AMP managed usage and subscriber data into high-performance Vertica analytic databases is not only cost effective and easy to do, it gives service providers the fastest path between questions and answers about quality of service, security, compliance and profitability."

See Sigma's AMP solution with the Vertica Analytic Database and meet representatives from both companies at the Sigma Systems Booth #101 at Management World 2009, from May 4-8, in Nice, France.
