Colin Mahony
VP/GM
Colin Mahony has been involved with Vertica from the beginning and now serves as its VP and General Manager. Prior to his role as GM, Colin was responsible for Operations, Product Management, Marketing and Business Development. Colin has over 16 years experience in the high tech industry, and he brings a combination of technical knowledge, market intelligence, customer relationships, and deal experience that help to drive Vertica’s growth and overall vision.
Prior to Vertica, Colin was a Vice President at Bessemer Venture Partners focused on investments primarily in enterprise software, telecommunications, and digital media. He established a great network and reputation for assisting in the creation and ongoing operations of companies through his knowledge of technology, markets and general management in both small startups and larger companies. Prior to Bessemer, Colin worked at Lazard Technology Partners in a similar investor capacity.
Prior to his venture capital experience, Colin was a Senior Analyst at the Yankee Group serving as an industry analyst and consultant covering databases, BI, middleware, application servers and ERP systems. Colin helped build the ERP and Internet Computing Strategies practice at Yankee in the late nineties. While at Yankee, Colin was a frequent speaker was quoted in several publications including ComputerWorld, InfoWorld, Business Week, and InformationWeek.
Colin earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degrees in Economics with a minor in Computer Science from Georgetown University. He is an active volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay and the Joey Fund for Cystic Fibrosis.
Matthew Cain
VP of Finance and Administration
Matt brings more than 20 years of global, high tech finance experience to Vertica. At Vertica, Matt is responsible for the company’s finance, contracts and legal affairs, human resources, and facilities business units. Prior to Vertica, Matt was a Divisional Controller at F5 Networks (joining via the Acopia Networks acquisition) where he was responsible for finance, administration, and facilities for the Data Solutions business unit. In this role Matt was also accountable for all international real estate and firm wide disaster contingency planning. Prior to F5 Networks, Matt served as the Controller at Acopia Networks, driving finance, administration, facilities and human resources. During his tenure at Acopia, Matt was instrumental in M&A activities leading to the successful acquisition and integration of the Acopia ARX File Virtualization technology into the F5 Networks portfolio of products. Before joining Acopia, Matt held various finance leadership positions including Tiburon Networks where he served as Director of Finance, Tyco as a Divisional Controller, and Radionics as a Corporate Controller. Matt began his career at Shiva Corporation in the accounting organization.
Matt holds a Bachelors of Science in Finance from Northeastern University.
Shilpa Lawande
VP of Engineering
Shilpa Lawande has been an integral part of the Vertica engineering team since its inception, bringing over 10 years of experience in databases, data warehousing and grid computing to Vertica. Prior to Vertica, she was a key member of the Oracle Server Technologies group where she worked directly on several data warehousing and self-managing features in the Oracle 9i and 10g databases.
Lawande is a co-inventor on several patents on query optimization, materialized views and automatic index tuning for databases. She has also co-authored two books on data warehousing using the Oracle database as well as a book on Enterprise Grid Computing.
Lawande has a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.
Scott Howser
VP of Product Marketing
Scott brings 15 years of unique high tech experience to Vertica, both as an enterprise customer and technology provider. Scott is responsible for Vertica’s product messaging, corporate branding, and establishing best practices for deployment and solution architectures. Prior to Vertica, Scott was a Global Technical Director at F5 Networks, focused primarily on the Data Solutions technology portfolio, assisting product management and product marketing in developing strategies to facilitate the adoption of emerging file virtualization technologies.
Prior to F5, Scott was a Technical Director at Acopia Networks, responsible for establishing strategic technical, market, and sales alliances and providing guidance on product initiatives to ensure effectiveness and ROI. Additionally, serving as a “Technical Evangelist”, Scott was leveraged globally as a key resource in new markets, verticals, and with Tier-1 prospects and customers. Prior to Acopia Networks, Scott was a Technical Business Consultant at EMC focused on IP storage technologies and distributed high-performance computing platforms. Prior to EMC, Scott held various positions at Discover Financial Services within Distributed Systems Engineering, Web Infrastructure Engineering, and Field Technology Services.
Scott earned an M.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, an M.S.I.S.M. from Loyola University, and a Bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Computer Science from Ohio Dominican University.
Edward Filippine
VP of Americas Sales & Worldwide Operations
Ed Filippine has direct revenue responsibility for Vertica’s Americas sales and channel business. Additionally Ed is responsible for the design, implementation and execution of the company’s sales systems, sales development, and sales training worldwide.
Ed most recently served as General Manager of the Acronis Americas business, responsible for leading the company’s strategy and business across North and South America and overseeing sales, channels, marketing and pre-sales engineering functions for the region. Prior to Acronis, Ed held the position of Vice President, Americas Corporate Sales Division for EMC where he managed sales, pre-sales engineering, operations, and services for an organization of several hundred employees. Previously, Ed held sales executive positions at WorldCom and American Network Exchange. Ed holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from St. Louis University.
Ari Daskalakis
VP of Technical Services
Ari Daskalakis brings 25 years of high tech experience to Vertica, working with a wide range of technologies, including protocol development, networking, web applications, and storage. At Vertica, Ari is responsible for worldwide field technical operations and customer support.
Prior to Vertica, Ari spent time at several successful startups, including Acopia Networks (acquired by F5 Networks) as Worldwide Director of Systems Engineering; ArrowPoint Communications (IPO, acquired by Cisco) as Worldwide Director of Technical Services; Prominet Corporation (acquired by Lucent) as Director of Technical Services; and Wellfleet Communications (IPO, merged with SynOptics to become Bay Networks) as a Systems Engineer and then Systems Engineering Manager.
Ari started his career at Data General as a developer working on their transport systems for computer networking. He has a Bachelors in Computer Science from Northeastern University.
